Woodcraft 101 with Eric Gorges: A New Lathe

Eric Gorges, host of A Craftsman’s Legacy is a wonderful craftsman but didn’t know much about turning wood. So, he headed to his local Woodcraft Store to pick up the tools and knowledge he would need to get started.

This video is a firsthand look into buying a new lathe and making your first bowl. The good, the bad and ugly. It’s all in the mix.

You won’t want to miss out on watching him struggle to get the chuck off the spindle! In the end, Eric learned a lot, made something he was really happy with, and can officially call himself a woodturner.

WOODTEK® NO.1 WOOD LATHE™

WOODTEK® NO.1 WOOD LATHE™

The No.1 Lathe™ is one of the strongest wood lathes on the market featuring heavy cast iron construction, high low-end torque and a flexible design system. Designed to have sufficient capacity to expand-as-you-grow, the basic 20″ swing lathe is heavier than most lathes in its class which is good for heavy off-center loads.

PSI Woodworking Economy Lathe Chuck

After buying an affordable Harbor Freight lathe I wanted a 4 jaw chuck. A little perusing online brought up Penn State Industries with some less expensive options. For .95 I ordered a kit with the chuck, 2 sets of jaws, and an 8″ jumbo set. The kit came with an adapter but it didn’t fit the Harbor Freight lathe. After I ordered the HF adapter I stumbled onto a ShopSmith that was being offered on a local Freecycle group. It was pretty rusted and locked up but after a lot of clean up, grinding, sanding, and oiling it came back pretty well so I ordered an adapter for the ShopSmith. (PSI has adapters for any lathe) I am very pleased with the PSI chuck. It holds very tight and is easy to use. I highly recommend the chuck; you can’t beat the price and all that comes with it. The folks at PSI are extremely friendly to deal with as well.
